Toriike Pond on Shimoji Island consists of two giant dolines, which are essentially massive sinkholes surrounded by greenery everywhere you look. Formed when a stalactite cave collapsed, Toriike Pond is a unique and quiet spot where you can truly unwind. The ponds themselves are striking, with one being 45 meters deep and the other 25 meters, both connected to the sea via an underwater cave. While diving here is popular for witnessing the boundary between fresh and saltwater (also called halocline), it’s equally delightful to simply explore the area on foot. We loved strolling along the elevated wooden path that leads to a viewing platform. The peacefulness of the place was a welcome escape to just get away from it all. The views are absolutely breathtaking, especially with the distant ocean as a picturesque backdrop. To top it off, visiting Toriike Pond is completely free! It's a great spot for a relaxing afternoon, so if you're looking for a cute little spot with an extraordinary natural landscape, Toriike Pond is a must-see.
