Highlights of the Cinque Torri
The second to last hiking day is here, and it's packed with highlights! Today, we head towards the next mountain hut, passing by the stunning Cinque Torri. This rock formation might be less famous than Tre Cime, but it’s just as beautiful. We’re staying at the Rifugio Nuvolau, at 2575 meters high.
Starting the day
The trail began with a steady and moody climb, since the weather wasn't that greaat. The path was challenging, and we even had to use our hands while climbing up a rocky part. • Distance: 14 km • Ascent: 1650m • Descent: 790m
Sheltering for thunderstorms
At an altitude of 2,450 meters, we found ourselves caught in a thunderstorm. At this height, with nothing and no one else around, it was crucial to find shelter. We kept our hiking poles and other conductive materials far away and managed to stay dry in a rock alcove. It felt like an open-air cinema, with a 180-degree panoramic view in front of us. I absolutely loved it. As soon as the rain let up a bit, we continued to the nearest hut, Rifugio Averau, where we could wait for the storm to pass and grab something to eat.
Cinque Torri
After the rain, and a quick lunch break in a hut, we soon reached a viewpoint looking out over Cinque Torri. It’s a group of rock towers, less known than Tre Cime, but the views were equally spectacular.
Rifugio Nuvolau in the Dolomites
The Nuvolau hut was the most basic hut I stayed at during a week in the Dolomites. But this made it not less worth it. Built in 1883, Rifugio Nuvolau is the oldest refuge in the Dolomites. Located on the summit of Mount Nuvolau at 2575 meters, it is often called an eagle's nest due to its breathtaking location. This hut has been famous since the early days of mountaineering for its incredible panorama. The view from the top, especially at sunrise, made the effort to get there entirely worthwhile. Far from ski lifts and the hustle and bustle of Cortina, Rifugio Nuvolau is a very simple hut which adds to its charm. Showers are only available if there’s been enough rain, and you have to pay a small fee. Despite its basic amenities, a stay in the hut is a very unique experience. Have some dinner before watching the sunset over the mountains. The magnificent view + the peaceful isolation = one with nature 🫶🏽
