Scenic hike through Switzerland's hidden Alpine gem

Nestled in the Glarus Alps of Eastern Switzerland, Klöntalersee is a breathtaking alpine lake renowned for its stunning turquoise and emerald colours. Encircled by majestic mountains, this lake is often hailed as one of Switzerland’s most beautiful, drawing comparisons to a Norwegian fjord. The 7-kilometer hike along the lake's southern shore is a treat in every season: summer invites swimmers to its cool, clear waters, while autumn transforms the surrounding trees into a colourful reflection on the lake's surface. The trail can be started from either the western or eastern ends, both of which are accessible by bus from Glarus. For the ideal route, we advise to begin on the western end of the lake, near Gasthof Klöntal which is reachable by bus. Follow the “Wanderweg” trail along the lake’s south side, a mostly level and easy path suitable for all skill levels. Though narrow in places, the trail gives breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding landscapes. Along the way, you’ll pass beaches, wooded areas, and picturesque waterfalls, all perfect for a picnic or a quick swim. Restaurants and cafés are located at both ends of the lake, though there are no amenities in between, so pack your own snacks or picnic supplies if you want to take a break. Swimming is possible, though the depth of the lake keeps the water always cool.
