Visit Ek' Balam, cenote Xcanche, and drive to Rio Lagartos / Izamal and Progreso
Discover Maya city Ek' Balam (lesser known than Chitzén Itzá but our favorite!), cool down in cenote Xcanche and drive to Rio Lagartos (a nature reserve with flamingo's and crocodiles). COVID-19 ruined this last plan, so we headed to Izamal instead.

Visit Ek' Balam and cenote X'Kekén
° Ek' Balam Lesser known than Chichén Itzá, but 100% worth a visit! Lovely place in the middle of the jungle, no mass tourism and you can climb the pyramids/buildings (which is not the case in Chichén Itzá). Enjoy the wide view from the high pyramid. Note: not for people with fear of hights because the stairs are very steep. ° Cenote X'Kekén is a short walk from Ek' Balam, so recommended to visit while you're there.

Unfortuntaley no Rio Lagartos, but Izamal (the yellow city) instead
We drove all the way to Rio Lagartos to be stopped by the police 1 km before: Rio Lagartos was not accessible for tourists due to COVID-19. :( Very disappointing, and a long drive for nothing... Our next stay was in Progreso, so we started driving to Progreso with a little detour to Izamal. ° Visit Izamal The yellow city that turned our mood positive again. The city is not big, but it's nice to stroll around.

Progreso
We wanted to stay at the sea instead of the city (so not Mérida). We stayed in an AirBnb at Progreso and it was the most wonderful villa we've ever stayed in.
