The Augstmatthorn is one of the viewpoints in the Bernese Oberland where the three famous peaks - Eiger, Monch, Jungfrau - shine. A view that will never bore us: seeing the eternal snow sparkle under the clear blue Swiss sky from a distance at height.
For this hike, the Augstmatthorn was designated as the goal. We departed from the small cozy village of Habkern, about ten kilometers from Interlaken. Through a wooded climb, we walk straight out of the valley to the Hardergrat. The Augstmatthorn is part of this ridge. Through an impressive ridge walk, we walk high above the stunning blue of Lake Brienz with the Bernese Oberland behind. Is there anything more beautiful? A ridge walk always has something special: the feeling of walking along a mountain ridge with a kilometer-long view on either side of steep walls, it remains a magical feeling.
The ultimate goal, the Augstmatthorn, is already visible from the ridge. Sometimes it's not motivating to see how far you still have to go, but sometimes it is also because you want to enjoy the view as quickly as possible! We walked five kilometers along the ridge, which is part of the famous Hardergrat Trail (23.3 km, 2679 meters of elevation).
After passing the summit, we walk down via a more well-known trail to the Jägerstübli Lombachalp, where you can enjoy something to eat and drink. We then walk further back to Habkern where the car is parked.
