Besalú is half an hour's drive from Girona and is a hidden gem in the Catalan countryside. It is a small village, a bit of a stereotype of a medieval town with old churches and houses, and even an old stone bridge. Besalù also has the best-preserved remains of a "mikveh" (a communal bath) from the Middle Ages.
At every street corner, you will find signs with explanations that tell you everything about the history of Besalù.
Some highlights of this town:
- Sant Pere monastery from the 12th century
- Sant Vicenç church from the 12th century, where a Gothic side chapel is dedicated to La Vera Creu
- The Romanesque bridge over the Fluvia
One day is more than enough time for this small town.
This experience is part of the Grand Tour of Catalonia, part 4.
