Samburu National Park is not always part of a classic travel guide about Kenya (for first time visitors). That's mainly because it's a bit further away from the most popular parks of the country. But let me tell you: it is worth the travel time! Samburu is a beautiful and lesser-known wildlife reserve in northern Kenya, along the banks of the Ewaso Ng’iro River. The reserve is famous for its unique wildlife, including the "Samburu Special Five": Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, and beisa oryx. All animals that are rare or absent in other Kenyan parks.
The nature itself is stunning too, with rolling hills and a red-ish look & feel. Unique! The reserve is named after the Samburu people, a semi-nomadic community related to the Maasai tribe. Their culture, colorful clothing, and traditions make visiting the area even more special. Be sure to pay them a visit when you're around.
So if you're looking for a less crowded, more authentic experience: add Samburu to your travel schedule.
