The train ride from Kandy to Ella is famous and often ranks in the top 10 of the most beautiful train journeys in the world. The route offers stunning views of tea plantations and mountainous terrain. I didn't dare hang out of the door for a picture, but I made the most of my window seat, taking in the breathtaking sights. Traveling in second class without a reserved seat also had its charm—locals sang and played music, creating a fun atmosphere. However, there’s one important thing I wish I’d done differently: book my tickets in advance. Since I was backpacking and didn’t plan much ahead, I ended up purchasing my ticket only a day before the journey. Tickets for second-class reserved seats sell out quickly, so if you’re looking for a guaranteed seat, it's best to get your tickets as soon as possible. I ended up with a non-reserved second-class seat, and the first train was so crowded I had to wait for the next one. I stood for the first two hours, but thankfully, many locals got off near Nuwara Eliya, allowing me to sit and enjoy the rest of the journey in comfort. So, if you're planning this iconic train ride, make sure to reserve your seat early! Trust me, you will enjoy it—it’s truly spectacular.
