Otagi Nenbutsu-ji Temple, hidden in Kyoto’s lush Arashiyama hills, is unlike any other you’ll find in the city. Far from the crowds and typical tourist paths, this quirky temple features over 1,200 unique stone statues. The fact that you can see so many statues is definitely amazing. But what’s even more fun is that each rakan statue is completely unique! Every single one of these statues has its own character, facial expression, height, positioning,... you name it. When we were walking around the temple area, we saw statues in deep meditation, sharing a laugh, or even playing a game of tennis. Never thought we’d see that in a temple! The temple grounds are small but filled with character everywhere you look. Most statues are covered in moss, by the way, which signifies simplicity and humility. Also, don't miss ringing the Sambo-no-Kane, or "Bells of the Three Treasures," which is said to bring good luck. We absolutely loved our visit to Otagi Nenbutsu-ji. It offers so much more than just a typical temple experience. It’s a chance to see a different side of Kyoto, and a less crowded side too! With an entrance fee of just 300 yen (less than € 2), it’s a peaceful visit where you can enjoy art, nature, and spirituality all in one place. And if you’re planning on visiting the famous Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, you’ll be happy to learn that it’s just a short walk away!
