The Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici is the only national park in Catalonia, famous for its impressive mountain landscape, rich flora, and fauna. The park is home to nearly 200 lakes and countless streams, with water being one of its main features.
This national park certainly could not be missed during our adventurous road trip through Catalonia, which forms the central point of our trip. It is not accessible by car, but you can park just before the park in a large parking lot. There is also the option to drive by jeep from Espot to the Estany de Sant Maurici lake, which we did.
From the lake, we took a circular walk of a few kilometers, but there are various hiking routes possible. You have a continuous panoramic view of the lake, and along the way, you also walk past an impressive waterfall. Unfortunately, during our visit to the park, we could not see the mighty surrounding peaks due to the autumn weather, although that also gave the setting a mysterious atmosphere.
At the end of the hike, the jeep was waiting for us again (it runs back and forth every hour) to take us back to Espot.
This experience is part of the Grand Tour of Catalonia, part 3.
